Okay, GW really did it! Last Sunday I came back from work, switched on my PC and checked the web for news from the GD UK. What did I see? A whole bunch of amazing Dark Eldar models.
I'm sold! I'm not sure if GW ever managed to impress me that much in the past, at least not for a long time. I even went to the office of my part-time job and applied for a workload increase from 60 to 80 for the next two months.
So why that strange headline? Codex DE will suck up a lot of my time and money, even with my Craftworld/Dark Eldar hybrid approach and the fact that wyches and warriors sprues are interchangeable with each other and some eldar plastic sprues. Working extra time should help, but I'm searching for some other ways to raise funds. Selling the ork bits and models I own not only frees up money, it also get rid of a utopian project. Why do I call the ww2 themed ork army utopian?
Let's sketch up a timetable for the next 6 month. Fall and early winter 2010 will see me working a lot (DE and getting money for the next student fees in Feb 2010), using my spare time to kitbash DE/CWE and paint them. I need to study in December and January for the round of test and if everything works out fine I will start with my diploma thesis in March , after spending February working in order to balance my account. I hope that I will finish the thesis and most of the DE/CWE models until early summer, as long as GW don't dish out wave two and three for DE in mid-2011.
After that I will search for a proper job. Which means I have no idea right now how much free time (and motivation) I will have to build a third army in 2011 anyway. I may end up buying most of the stuff again in 2011 or 2012, but I sell them now and use the money to get the DE and save funds for the student fees, than keeping the models in a box and hurting my study phase in Dec/Jan. I could speed up the ork project if I drop the majority of the conversions, but that would not only hurt the theme but also would need some extra funds, which I simply don't have at the moment.
So my schedule for the next days is to glue those few models I need for the upcoming tournament and make a list of all the stuff -like the 40k orks, my banshees and a couple of RPG books- I really don't use anymore. After the tournament I will spend my hobby time practicing with the Airbrush and starting to paint some of the eldar models.
That's all the news for today, stay tuned for an update next week with some tournament results and thoughts how to kitbash the new DE with my eldar and WHF DE models.

The grot in me weeps a little when I see you're making rid of your orks. But your plan for the coming six months really nails it. There will be no time for both armies.
I just wanna make sure you've really thought it over. It sucks when you're all giddy about an army because it's new and shiny. (Much like love... >_<) and then when you see it for what it really is it's... "I wish I had my old girlfriend back!"
Get parts of the planned DE army, paint them up and see what you feel about them in a month or so. If the feelings are the same. Sell the orks. Buy Dark Eldar.
The reason I'm so careful is that once, when I thought I'd never ever play 40K again. I threw away 6000 points of space marines. That was 6000pts in 2nd ed. points values. So you can imagine how many models it was... almost a full company. In the bin. I promised myself never to do that again... :)
Hehe, warning accepted! But I gave it a lot of thought.
Basically it is not primary the "wow, so much boobs and leather clothes" (DE or girlfriend, your choice...) factor.
My first two orders have already been placed at maelstrom and I bought one of each kit from the first wave, except for wyches and warriors (2+3 kits) and archon & mandrakes (none). At the moment I don't think I will dish out a third order prior to my final tests. Or at least not a large one. So no bankruptcy or sold off liver.
I don't want to repeat my faults from the Eldar build-up, buying lots of stuff at once, gluing them together and getting depressed by the sheer amount of stuff to paint.
The main idea behind getting those DE is not having a second army ready at a decent point level as soon as possible. The theme of my original Eldar force was moving away from those run of the mill craftworld style armies, aiming for a corsair/pirate theme. Thats also the reason why most of my first two orders are made up by infantry (plastic) models and only one single raider and ravager.
So for the first weeks and maybe even 1-3 months, I will either play some low point games (1k or less) with the DE, or use the converted infantry models in a 1750-2k eldar force. DE won't hit the gaming tables at full force, until I got a grip on painting and playing them.
Cheers, Karnstein
